My brothers and sisters, judge this case for me. Our Father has built this entire universe for the sole purpose of showing us His love, to show us how much He loves us. He created it in great detail and made it all work. He even made beautiful things that no one perhaps may see but yet He put them there in case we might stumble upon them. He made the world complex and amazing, everything having great order and relationship. He gave us life and skills and gift and abilities. He gave us commands because He wants us to life a full life and to guard what is sacred. He sent to us many souls who gave up their lives to teach us what is right and wrong. He even sent His son to die in our place.
How have the people He created and entrust the universe to treated His creation? Let’s see. We have polluted the earth for cheap gains and for momentary glories. We have killed and put the future generation in jeopardy by our greed. We have killed the most innocent in abortion and clamour for the killing of the old and vulnerable in physician assisted dying. We have contracepted and used the gift our sexuality as a means for selfish pleasure. We have called evil good and good evil. We have not held to the truth but preferred our selfish pride instead. We have bought and sold people and exploited the poor to manufacture our goods. We have made intimacy cheap and sellable in the pornography industry. We have treated our children like social experiments. We have thought of our life as our own possession. We have built shrines to ourselves and put our treasure and our labour to build up ourselves and not the kingdom of God. And, we would most likely kill Jesus all over again if He came back and challenged us in our selfish and sinful ways.
What should God do at this point? How long is He going to be patient? I am not sure, that question is above my pay scale. We might feel overwhelmed by all the evil in the world and throw up our hands and say, “What can I do?” I will tell you what we can do, we can repent and turn back to God with all our hearts. We need to see our lives as desperate without God. Sure we can look out at the world and see this evil and feel depressed, but that is a crafty trick to help us not to focus on our own lives and root out our own evil by God’s grace. I don’t know why God is so patient but I am thankful He is so I can repent and turn back to Him, seek His Grace and be saved from all my human faults and failings. God has given us more time when He justly should have wiped us out. We are doing evil right now on a greater scale than ever and the scary part is people think it is a good.
Repent, all of us, and know we cannot be saved without God and His mercy. If there is something you reject of Church teaching, then repent and ask for the grace to accept it because that stone that is causing you to stumble will become the cornerstone of your faith. If you are submersed in serious sins and addiction, go to Confession and admit you are powerless, then God can be your power. This Mass is a serious time of thanksgiving because in it we are reminded of how deadly our sins are because they put the Son of God on the cross and through horrific tortures. Yet, He did not want to condemn us even after that, He wants to save us and give us His grace. Thank you, God, for giving us time to change and turn back to You and trust You and seek Your mercy. Thank you that You still trust us and believe we can do great things if we will only turn to You and let You work fully in us.
