Homily – September 23 – 25th Sunday in Ordinary Time – Year B

A scientist recently published her research. Her research showed some pretty amazing findings. She was looking for the sources of a new phenomenon and that is sudden onset of Gender Dysphoria. That means someone who was, up to a certain point most often their early twenties, female and all of a sudden felt that she was not a girl and that she wanted to be a young man. Her research showed that this was set off by someone in her peer group. She also saw that this was a contributing factor to eating disorders among young ladies. She followed a scientific method, her conclusions followed from her research. She has been attacked and the university she works for has disciplined her. Social media has led this attack. No one who criticized her has looked at her research and shown her the error, they have simply told her she is wrong.

It seems that this is crazy to believe that something like this could happen in our free country. But it happens very frequently now. Anyone who stands up against what the media wants to promote is attacked and made to look like a fool and to be shunned.

There has been a recent attack on the Church with the Pennsylvania grand jury opening up the personnel files of four dioceses and naming 300 people for criminal activity. We are led to think by media that this is justice for the victims, that the Church has been exposed, again, as a pedophile hiding organization that no child is safe in. First of all, how many people have been convicted of a crime from this grand jury inquiry? Yes, that is right, zero. We would think that all of the three hundred were priests. They are not. Brothers, deacons and seminarians are part of it, too. How many are pedophiles? Very few. Most of the victims, 84%, were men age 15. Now I am not saying that it makes it right. No, abuse is abuse, however systematic going after same sex is not pedophilia. I am sure you can see the problem they were really having. But the media would not mention that fact. None of these cases are new, the perpetrators, for the most part, are dead or out of the ministry. The Catholic Church has done more work to make sure this doesn’t happen than any other institution. We think that this means this was a wide spread problem, however, during that time period there were over 5000 priests in these dioceses, meaning that they still had an offense rate lower than the regular population. I think that it is good that we have to be so accountable and that we are forced to clean house. However, this is a calculated attack on the Church to shut her up and make you feel terrible for being a Catholic. They are saying how dare you still stand up against us. We know it is calculated because have you ever heard of a grand jury going after the public school records? Of coaching institutions? Of Boy Scouts of America?

This is what Jesus is talking about being mocked and scourged and crucified and that the righteous voices of men will be silenced. Jesus tells us to accept the truth like a child. He chides the Apostles not to waste time figuring out who is best. We have a message of life to preach. Do not hang your head brothers and sisters. Do not listen to the lies of those who kill our Saviour. We have work to do, we have a message of salvation to preach. We have a revolution to engage in and that revolution is the culture of death. It started with our Lord and it will be continued in us. Those who accept the message as a child will be blessed. We must be informed. We must know why we are attacked and it is not because we are wrong but because we are right, like Jesus. We must, by God’s grace, live our truth and know it well so we can show the world the Way, the Truth and the Life. Remember, after the Church has been mocked and scourged and crucified, it will rise again. Let us not run away like the Apostles did at that moment of horror when it happened. Be ready to be faithful. The world needs us to be.
