Homily – November 25-26 – Solemnity of Christ the King – Year A

Christ the King – how does that sit in your life and what does that look like? Why would the Church honour such a feast? I am sure we all agree it isn’t because Christ needs to be reminded of the fact that He is King, but we do and the Gospel tells us how we are to serve Him. We will serve Him in the next person we meet, because the next person we meet is Christ our King. In every exciting and repulsive form, we meet Him.

There was a pastor hired by a church and in order to see what type of a Christian community they were, he showed up as a homeless man. He was asked to stay in the back of the church. Everyone he approached averted their eyes and avoided him. When the elder excitedly got up to announce their new pastor they were all ashamed to find out that it was the “homeless” man they had rejected. He told them told, “I am here among you, a gathering of people but not of Christians,” and he sent them all home. I am sure glad I was not part of that congregation. I am sure I would have felt just as ashamed as the other people there.

What about when I go to heaven and meet Jesus, the great King, how will I feel when I have spent so much of my life rejecting Him in His many forms, not working to alleviate his suffering but to secure my comfort? How will I stand when I am asked the questions of the righteous? How have I served this great King? How have I loved Him? I am blessed that I am not being called forth today to answer these questions as the King asked. I am blessed because I have a chance to do better today in serving Him. As we move into this holy season of Advent, let us ask ourselves how we are preparing for this great King. Let us meditate on this question. Advent is for preparing for Christmas, that coming of the great King. A great way would be to do all these things that the King questions so that we do not miss Him.
